EVALUATING ALTERNATIVE FARMING SYSTEMS: A FUZZY MADM APPROACH AgEcon
Marks, Leonie A.; Dunn, Elizabeth G..
This paper develops a decision support method that integrates measures of achievement in the economic, environmental, and social aspects of farming. The decision support method combines multiple attribute decision making (MADM) with fuzzy logic. The fuzzy MADM model fully ranks decision alternatives relative to the preferences of decision makers and overcomes several problems inherent in other MADM approaches. It is concluded that fuzzy MADM can improve decision making on the farm.

Reworking the Standard Model of Competitive Markets: The Role of Fuzzy Logic and Genetic Algorithms in Modelling Complex Non-Linear Economic System AgEcon
Smith, Peter.
Some aspects of economic systems (eg, nonlinearity, qualitative variables) are intractable when incorporated into models. The widespread practice of excluding them (or greatly limiting their role) produces deviations of unknown size and form between the resulting models and the reality they purport to represent. To explore this issue, and the extent to which a change in methodology can improve tractability, a combination of two techniques, fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms, was applied to the problem of how the sellers in a freely competitive market, if initially trading at different prices, can find their way to supply/demand equilibrium. A multi-agent model was used to simulate the evolution of autonomously- learnt rule-governed behaviour, (i), under...

Fuzzy subset approach in coupled population dynamics of blowflies Biol. Res.
CASTANHO,MARÍA J.P.; MAGNAGO,KARINE F; BASSANEZI,RODNEY C; GODOY,WESLEY A.C..
This paper is a study on the population dynamics of blowflies employing a density-dependent, non-linear mathematical model and a coupled population formalism. In this study, we investigated the coupled population dynamics applying fuzzy subsets to model the population trajectory, analyzing demographic parameters such as fecundity, survival, and migration. The main results suggest different possibilities in terms of dynamic behavior produced by migration in coupled populations between distinct environments and the rescue effect generated by the connection between populations. It was possible to conclude that environmental heterogeneity can play an important role in blowfly metapopulation systems. The implications of these results for population dynamics of...

Non-farm income diversification of rural farm households in Central and Southeastern Europe: an application of fuzzy set theory AgEcon
Fritzsch, Jana; Buchenrieder, Gertrud; Mollers, Judith.
A fuzzy logic model for quantifying farm households’ potential for non-farm income diversification is developed and applied to 1,077 farm households in Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovenia. About three quarters of households have a diversification potential, but not all households use it. An analysis of diversification potential and diversification behaviour shows that there are seven household types in the sample. Not all development options, i.e. farm development, farm exit, or starting non-farm employment, are equally suitable for all households thus fine targeting of policy measures according to the household type could be important for policy makers.

A Composite Fuzzy Indicator for Assessing Farm Household Potential for Non-farm Income Diversification AgEcon
Fritzsch, Jana.
European politicians encourage the income diversification of rural households through various measures. Although being aware of farm households’ potential for non-farm income diversification seems important for finely-targeting such policy measures, no attempt has thus far been made to summarise the various determinants of income diversification in a single figure. This contribution aims to close this gap. A composite fuzzy indicator that measures farm household potential for non-farm income diversification is developed and applied to 1,053 farm households in Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovenia. The indicator summarises the incentives of and capacities for non-farm income diversification on the individual household member level, and on the...

Indigenous Past Climate Knowledge as Cultural Built-in Object and Its Accuracy Ecology and Society
Leclerc, Christian; CIRAD, UMR AGAP, Montpellier, France; christian.leclerc@cirad.fr; Mwongera, Caroline ; Montpellier SupAgro, Montpellier, France; carolmwongera@yahoo.com.
In studying indigenous climate knowledge, two approaches can be envisioned. In the first, traditional knowledge is a cultural built-in object; conceived as a whole, its relevance can be assessed by referring to other cultural, economic, or technical components at work within an indigenous society. In the second, the accuracy of indigenous climate knowledge is assessed with western science knowledge used as an external reference. However, assessing the accuracy of indigenous climate knowledge remains a largely untapped area. We aim to show how accurate the culturally built indigenous climate knowledge of extreme climatic events is, and how amenable it is to fuzzy logic. A retrospective survey was carried out individually and randomly among 195 Eastern...

Solum depth spatial prediction comparing conventional with knowledge-based digital soil mapping approaches Scientia Agricola
Menezes,Michele Duarte de; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Mello,Carlos Rogério de; Owens,Phillip Ray; Curi,Nilton.
Solum depth and its spatial distribution play an important role in different types of environmental studies. Several approaches have been used for fitting quantitative relationships between soil properties and their environment in order to predict them spatially. This work aimed to present the steps required for solum depth spatial prediction from knowledge-based digital soil mapping, comparing the prediction to the conventional soil mapping approach through field validation, in a watershed located at Mantiqueira Range region, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Conventional soil mapping had aerial photo-interpretation as a basis. The knowledge-based digital soil mapping applied fuzzy logic and similarity vectors in an expert system. The knowledge-based...

Estimating the average length of hospitalization due to pneumonia: a fuzzy approach BJMBR
Nascimento,L.F.C.; Rizol,P.M.S.R.; Peneluppi,A.P..
Exposure to air pollutants is associated with hospitalizations due to pneumonia in children. We hypothesized the length of hospitalization due to pneumonia may be dependent on air pollutant concentrations. Therefore, we built a computational model using fuzzy logic tools to predict the mean time of hospitalization due to pneumonia in children living in São José dos Campos, SP, Brazil. The model was built with four inputs related to pollutant concentrations and effective temperature, and the output was related to the mean length of hospitalization. Each input had two membership functions and the output had four membership functions, generating 16 rules. The model was validated against real data, and a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was...

Fuzzy modeling in the prediction of climate indices and productive performance of quails kept in climate chamber REA
MARQUES,JORDÂNIO I.; LOPES NETO,JOSÉ P.; LOPES,FERNANDA F. DE M.; FURTADO,DERMEVAL A.; ARAÚJO,TIAGO G. P..
ABSTRACT With the demand in the production at large-scale food, confinement of animals has become a necessity of the productive process because of the increase in production capacity and optimization of the spaces reserved for creations. In this context, the aim of this study was the development and validation of models using fuzzy logic for predicting climate indices and productive performance of European quails kept in a climatic chamber. The model developed was analyzed from two points of view; the first one took into account the prediction of climate indexes where the input variables were the temperature (°C) and relative humidity (%) of the air. In the second, related to the prediction of productive performance, the input variables were air...

Embedded system in Arduino platform with Fuzzy control to support the grain aeration decision Ciência Rural
Szesz Junior,Albino; Monteiro Junior,Marcos; Dias,Ariangelo Hauer; Mathias,Ivo Mário; Conti,Giuvane.
ABSTRACT: Aeration is currently the most commonly used technique to improve the drying and storage of grain, depending on temperature and water content of the grain, as of the temperature and relative humidity of the outside air. In order to monitor temperature and humidity of the grain mass, it is possible to have a network of sensors in the cells of both internal and external storage. Use of artificial intelligence through Fuzzy theory, has been used since the 60s and enables their application on various forms. Thus, it is observed that the aeration of grain in function of representing a system of controlled environment can be studied in relation to the application of this theory. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to present an embedded Fuzzy control...

Spatial variability of soil fertility and its relation with cocoa yield AGRIAMBI
Santos,Railton O. dos; Franco,Laís B.; Silva,Samuel A.; Sodré,George A.; Menezes,Agna A..
ABSTRACT The knowledge on the spatial variability of soil properties and crops is important for decision-making on agricultural management. The objective of this study was to evaluate the spatial variability of soil fertility and its relation with cocoa yield. The study was conducted over 14 months in an area cultivated with cocoa. A sampling grid was created to study soil chemical properties and cocoa yield (stratified in season, off-season and annual). The data were analyzed using descriptive and exploratory statistics, and geostatistics. The chemical attributes were classified using fuzzy logic to generate a soil fertility map, which was correlated with maps of crop yield. The soil of the area, except for the western region, showed possibilities ranging...

Fuzzy logic and geostatistics in studying the fertility of soil cultivated with the rubber tree Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Lima,Julião Soares de Sousa; Silva,Samuel de Assis; Santos,Adilson Almeida dos; Altoé,Marcelo Soares.
ABSTRACT Knowledge of the spatial variability of soil attributes is an aid to soil management. The aim of this study was to apply fuzzy logic and geostatistics in defining the spatial variability of soil fertility, in soil cultivated with the rubber tree. Soil samples from the 0-0.20 m and 0.20-0.40 m layers were collected in a stratified random sampling grid, with a shortest distance of 6 m, for a total of 60 points. The chemical attributes were P, K, Ca, Mg, BS, CEC and V. The spatial dependence of the attributes was determined, and the maps were constructed using ordinary kriging interpolation. The interpolated values were transformed into degrees of pertinence (FI), with the lower and upper limits previously defined, using an increasing model. The...

Knowledge-based digital soil mapping for predicting soil properties in two representative watersheds Scientia Agricola
Menezes,Michele Duarte de; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Mello,Carlos Rogério de; Owens,Phillip Ray; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT: The estimation of soil physical and chemical properties at non-sampled areas is valuable information for land management, sustainability and water yield. This work aimed to model and map soil physical-chemical properties by means of knowledge-based digital soil mapping approach as a study case in two watersheds representative of different physiographical regions in Brazil. Two watersheds with contrasting soil-landscape features were studied regarding the spatial modeling and prediction of physical and chemical properties. Since the method uses only one value of soil property for each soil type, the way of choosing typical values as well the role of land use as a covariate in the prediction were tested. Mean prediction error (MPE) and root mean...

PERTINENCE CURVES IN FUZZY MODELING OF THE PRODUCTIVE RESPONSES OF BROILERS REA
Lourençoni,Dian; Abreu,Paulo G. de; Yanagi Junior,Tadayuki; Campos,Alessandro T.; Yanagi,Silvia de N. M..
ABSTRACT The selection of the type of fuzzy systems pertinence curve allows a better representation of the mathematical model and a smaller simulation error. We aimed to study the effect of pertinence curves in fuzzy modeling of broiler performance, created in different production systems. For the development and testing of fuzzy models, three commercial aviaries (conventional, tunnel with negative pressure, and dark house) were evaluated over one year, totaling six lots per system. For the development of the model, the input variables were enthalpy in each rearing phase (initial: phases 1, 2, and 3; growth: phase 4; and final: phase 5) and the output variables were feed intake (FE), weight gain (GP), feed conversion (FE), and the productive efficiency...

FUZZY MODEL FOR PREDICTING CLOACAL TEMPERATURE OF BROILER CHICKENS UNDER THERMAL STRESS REA
Abreu,Lucas H. P.; Yanagi Junior,Tadayuki; Campos,Alessandro T.; Lourençoni,Dian; Bahuti,Marcelo.
ABSTRACT Broiler chickens submitted to different intensities and durations of thermal stress are subject to variation in cloacal temperature and, consequently, to a decrease in performance. Given the complexity of these interactions, artificial intelligence is a useful methodology for decision-making. Thus, this study aimed to assess and predict, by means of a fuzzy model, the cloacal temperature of broiler chickens submitted to thermal stress in the second week of life, with varying durations and intensities, in climatized wind tunnels. Mamdani's inference and defuzzification methods by means of the center of gravity were used. One hundred and twenty rules were elaborated. FUZZY MODELING OF THE EFFECTS OF IRRIGATION AND WATER SALINITY IN HARVEST POINT OF TOMATO CROP. PART II: APPLICATION AND INTERPRETATION REA
Viais Neto,Daniel dos S.; Cremasco,Camila P.; Bordin,Deyver; Putti,Fernando F.; Silva Junior,Josué F.; Gabriel Filho,Luís R. A..
ABSTRACT Tomato, the most popular greenery, is characterized by being a demanding crop in water and when in prolonged and severe drought, has limitations in its growth and reduction in productivity. In addition, this vegetable is affected by excess salinity in the water, which causes leaf wilting, apex and leaf edges burn until their death. Such effects generally are studied using statistical analysis, but there are mathematical theories that allow finer adjustments, highlighting among them, the fuzzy logic. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects on the growth and yield of hybrid tomato from different water tensions in the soil and different salinity doses in the irrigation at 120 days after sowing using fuzzy modeling. It was used data...
